WORLD NEWS
FORENSICS AND BED BUGS?: Not that there are many bright sides to bed bug infestations but it must not be long before forensic investigators realise the value of bed bugs in evaluations of crime scenes. In an infested property, and the number of those are multiplying daily, bed bugs provide a long term storage of blood which could be used to profile who was staying in the premises in the lead up to a crime. I am not a pathologist but insects that only live on human blood and store such for extended periods must be a source of valuable information. Unfortunately, bed bugs are here to stay so we may as well get some benefit from their presence.
BED BUG INSURANCE: It was inevitable that insurance companies would tap into the fastest growing pest problem in the world today. I am certain companies in Australia will follow the lead in USA where policies are now available, particularly as simple low cost inspections would minimise bed bug problems and insure [excuse the pun]healthy profits for the underwriters. I don't know the details as yet but if an insurance company aligns with a bed bug professional to maintain bi-annual inspections of hotels etc, any bed bug occurrences would be limited and quickly dispatched. The problems and cost get out of control when properties are reactive and wait for a complaint by which time the infestation may involve several floors. It will be essential that insurance companies use skilled professionals as they could otherwise face big layouts. This will not only help in reducing the spread of bed bugs but will hopefully weed out certain operators who don't really appreciate the specific behaviour and control issues of bed bugs and constantly fail their customers.
TWO REPORTS, ONE OF DEADLY POTENTIAL, ONE OF DEADLY OUTCOME! I have mentioned on this site the concerns in medical circles due to the loss of skin integrity caused by bed bugs feeding. Now, researchers have found METHICILLIN RESISTANT, STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS [MRSA] and VANCOMYCIN RESISTANT, ENTEROCOCCUS FAECIUM [VRE] in bed bugs removed from the bodies of three patients from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
Reporting in the CDC Journal of Emerging Infectious diseases, researchers Marc G. Romney and Christopher F. Lowe conclude Bedbugs carrying MRSA and/or VRE may have the potential to act as vectors for transmission. Further studies are needed to characterise the association between S. aureus and bedbugs. Bedbugs carriage of MRSA, and the portal of entry provided through feeding, suggests a plausible, potential mechanism for passive transmission of bacteria during a blood meal. Because of the insects ability to compromise the skin integrity of its host, and the propensity for S. aureus to invade damaged skin, bedbugs may serve to amplify MRSA infections in impoverished, urban communities. Source: Lowe CF, Romney MG. Bedbugs as vectors for drug-resistant bacteria [Letter].Emerging Infectious Diseases 2011 June; [Epub. ahead of print].
Lowe and Romney also note that bed bugs and MRSA are both significant problems in the Downtown Eastside. A 2008 City of Vancouver Study found 31% of Downtown Eastside residents have reported bed bugs, and patients from this area have a high rate of MRSA colonisation of infection. The researchers suggest".....these insects may act as a hidden environmental reservoir for MRSA and may promote the spread of MRSA in impoverished and overcrowded communities." This is another significant warning of the health risks associated with the current, massive growth of bed bug populations world wide. I would, however, dispute the suggestion that this is only a risk for impoverished and overcrowded communities. My extensive observations and research indicates that cross feeding of hosts by bed bugs between all levels of society is rife. There is ample evidence of people being bitten and potentially infested from public transport [this summer I found evidence of a bed bug attack on an airplane], library books, public venues and commercial offices and shops. BEDBUGS CAN BITE YOU ANYWHERE, ANYTIME AND THEY DON'T CHECK YOUR SOCIAL STATUS!
In Thailand, a 23 year old New Zealand tourist, Sarah Carter, died after staying in a Chiang Mai hotel with two friends. Her two friends also became seriously ill. Ron McDowell, an independent consultant to the United Nations specialising in hazardous substances, carried out tests on the room where Miss Carter and her friends stayed and found traces of the toxin CHLORPHYRIFOS, a toxin used to kill bed bugs and cockroaches and banned from interior use in many countries. He strongly believes Miss Carters death is due to exposure to the toxin. The fact that traces of CHLORPHYRIFOS were found three months after Miss Carters stay, suggests there could have been high levels of of the toxin at that time. Six other people are reported to have died in similar circumstances and McDowell said the toxin caused symptoms identical to those they all suffered. THIS, ONCE AGAIN HIGHLIGHTS THE IRRESPONSIBLE AND DANGEROUS PRACTICE OF ACCOMMODATION PROVIDERS USING UNTRAINED PEST CONTROLLERS OR, WORSE STILL, ATTEMPTING TO SELF TREAT THIER PREMISES FOR BED BUGS.IT HAS ALSO RAISED ANOTHER HAZARD ASSOCIATED WITH TRAVEL IN COUNTRIES WHO HAVE LESS THAN RIGOROUS STANDARDS OF CHEMICAL AND POISON CONTROL AND STAYING IN HOTELS THAT WILL NOT RISK LOSING TOURIST DOLLARS DUE TO BED BUGS AT ANY COST. THIS DESPERATE BED BUG CONTROL ATTEMPT IS NOW UNDER INVESTIGATION IN WHAT COULD LEAD TO CHARGES OF MANSLAUGHTER.
A new bill (HR967) has now been presented to the USA Congress by Representative Jean Schmidt (R. Ohio). This bill seems a major step in the right direction in an attempt to create research funding for bed bugs, asses and recognise effective pesticides for registered use against bed bugs (presumably, this will remove synthetic pyrethroids from "registered" lists in the USA) and to allocate funding to assist those most at risk of prolonged exposure to and unwillingly assisting in the spread of bed bugs, the poor and aged.
This bill seems to be a direct result of an Ohio report that is reported below and which I have forwarded to the WA health Minister, The Honourable Kim Hames. His reply and my comments can be found on the Government page. Although the minister seems to be more informed on the subject than others I have approached, it seems Australian Governments take dubious reports on weapons of mass destruction much more seriously than they do reports on bugs of mass disruption!
THIS IS THE INTRODUCTORY LETTER FROM DIRECTOR OF HEALTH (OHIO), ALVIN D. JACKSON M.D., TO THE GOVERNOR THE HONORABLE TED STRICKLAND. THIS LETTER SHOWS THAT EVERYTHING A BED BUG SPECIALIST HAS BEEN TRYING TO WARN PEOPLE AND ESPECIALLY GOVERNMENT ABOUT IN THESE PAGES IS NOW HAPPENING IN AMERICA.
HOW LONG BEFORE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENTS REALISE THAT ACTION IS NEEDED TO SLOW THIS PLAGUE.

OHIO BED BUG WORKING PARTY RELEASES REPORT: Here is a link to the full report from a group made up of Federal and local government and health authorities, pest controllers and others involved in the battle against bed bugs in that state.

A VERY WORRYING PRACTICE UNCOVERED

This bed base was purchased new but when I stripped off the bottom cover during a bed bug treatment, I discovered that the base had been recovered with the original cover still in place. When shown to the owner, they immediately contacted the store where the base was bought and were then contacted by the manufacturer who agreed to replace the base but with no explanation as to why the bed was recovered. The fact that it appears to be a commercial type cover underneath gives further cause for concern. You would never discover this unless you removed the bottom cover. This is the second one I have personally come across and aside from the obvious unease at not getting what you pay for, the danger of receiving bed bugs from a used bed being sold as new is unconscionable. This is a SLEEPMAKER base!
BED BUG HITS! Bed bug infestations of iconic and unusual areas are becoming so frequent, I am just going t o start a list for easier updates. Perhaps seeing how fast this modern plague is spreading might jolt those in authority to a/ do something & b/ most importantly do it right: CARNEGIE HALL THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ROOM LINCOLN CENTRES, DANIEL H. HERE IS A LINK TO A GOOD ARTICLE ABOUT "NATURAL" BED BUG REMEDIES. THE COMMENTS ARE VERY RELEVANT TO A LOT OF WEBSITE PRODUCTS WHICH NEED NO VERIFICATION AND ARE SUPPLIED BY SOME FACELESS ENTITY WITHOUT ANY CREDENTIALS. MOST OF THESE PRODUCTS, ALONG WITH BARRIERS ETC, MERELY DETER BED BUGS FROM AREAS IN THE SHORT TERM BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN BED BUGS ARE GOING TO HAVE A "HISSY FIT" AND MOVE OUT OF YOUR HOUSE. THEY ARE JUST GOING TO ACCESS YOU IN ANOTHER WAY. I THINK THE COMMENT ABOUT THE FIFTEEN MINUTE SPRAY IS ALSO VERY RELEVANT TO A LOT OF PEST CONTROLLERS. http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-skeptic-bedbug-spray-20101025,0,2017880.story
I HAVE TAKEN SOME LIBERTIES TO GIVE MY OVERVIEW OF WHATS HAPPENED AND IS HAPPENING WITH BED BUGS TODAY. INSPIRED BY THE ORIGINAL ORSON WELLS CLASSIC, I FEEL THIS IS STILL A FACTUAL ACCOUNT OF WHERE WE ARE TODAY.

Bed Bugs’ War of the Worlds
Barely noticed at first, they crept into our bedrooms and secretly joined us as we slept. “We know now that as human beings busied themselves about their various concerns”*, in the dead of night they were probed and poked and syphoned of their blood whilst the minute invaders thrived and grew. Young adventurous backpackers and commercial travellers were the first affected, but soon the invaders were spreading to households and apartments across the social divide, creeping through power sockets and conduits to unsuspecting neighbours. Tired irritable folk were scratching at weeping lumps that stretched from their ankles to their faces.
Our ancestors had been tormented for thousands of years but, for reasons unexplained, the hordes of Cimex Lectularius withdrew in the 1950’s. Populations continued to develop in Third World countries, but the West, vacated, became complacent. People soon forgot their suffering, researchers turned to other threats, and a new generation grew up in ignorance of a tiny pest mentioned only in old nursery rhymes. But, the hordes were waiting for an opportunity to return, and that opportunity came. Like an army of Trojan horses, our skies soon filled with squadrons of airliners able to dispatch people and their luggage to all corners of the earth, and, so advanced the parties of bed bugs.
They gathered most where travellers shared accommodation such as backpacker hostels and hotels. The early opportunity to stem the flow was lost to embarrassment, ignorance and an unwillingness to allocate the necessary resources to fight this creeping parasite. Standard control practices not only failed, but spread the night time usurpers further through buildings and into inaccessible areas where they hid and fed and bred.
The governments said there was no threat and we should put up with the small discomfort. As the populations grew they were carried by second hand goods and bags and clothing into schools, aged care facilities and hospitals and the cry got louder. Airlines grew fearful for pilots wearied by night time scratching. Poor people lamented their inability to find assistance, as their family became the midnight food source for thousands of parasites. The infirm could do little but be constantly sucked of their blood, completely at the mercy of this ancient predator.
It was not long before the stories started appearing in news reports around the world:
AFC reports that bed bugs have been found on French SNCF overnight trains from Nice to Metz. New bookings have been suspended for a week while the three affected coaches have been taken out of service and “disinfected”.
US bed bugs immigrate to Germany Hamburg – Bed bugs from the USA come to Germany. The little nuisances travel in the vacation luggage into our country, as the „Geo“-Magazine reports. Reason: In the USA the bed bugs are resistant against pesticides. Bed bug bites itch vigorously.
A study led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine last year found the number of complaints about bedbugs in the capital grew annually by an average of 28.5% between 2000-2006. And there's no sign of the problem abating with Rentokil reporting the number of bedbug call outs has gone up by 24% in the first half of the year.
Tiny blood-sucking bedbugs have become an epidemic in New York City. The little pests have invaded even the cleanest and most expensive apartments in neighbourhoods around New York. In fact, a councilwoman from the Upper West Side has called for a citywide bedbug task force to address the problem
The USA Government was the first to realize the urgency and importance of the new “Bed Bug Pandemic” and called in experts from universities, pest control, local agencies and public health representatives. Summits were organized, education programmes were initiated, research funded for $50,000,000 and laws were passed restricting the sale of used furniture, enforcing disclosure of previous bed bug infestations and formalization of treatment regimes. But were these initiatives all too late? In New York, the creeping vampires have started infiltrating offices like Nike and Google, and have invaded department stores like Bloomingdale and even the Empire State Building.
Other governments are keeping their heads firmly planted between their cheeks, as always, placing their attention on events that threaten the holy grail of financial superiority. Other parasites, this time those in suits, market and sell pesticides known to be ineffective since the 1950’s, muddying attempts to stop the spread of bugs.
There are people like me out there. Specialist bed bug controllers who have studied the menace and are prepared to use the right weapons and methods, but we are too few. Without the support of the governments in their towers, for every person we free from the hordes, thousand more are unwillingly laying down to a bloody partnership to feed and harbor another spiraling population of bed bugs.
No, there will be no simple virus that stems this invasion. In fact, a simple virus could be the greatest danger for us. If a virus, dangerous to humans, takes that age old route and mutates to a form that can be carried and passed by bed bugs, then swine flu may seem like a common cold in comparison. People harbor bed bugs for months before they become aware of their presence. Bugs will feed anytime and anywhere if they are hungry and modern travel is constantly re-supplying new bugs to our cities. So how can we fight something we are unaware of and stop a constant, tiny carrier invading our shores, homes and families?
Go about your business people, but remember, just as we scavenge the planet and plunder species for food, we to are being scavenged for our blood.
Perhaps “The War of this World” has begun?

HIGH BROW BED BUGS? THE EPIDEMIC OF BED BUGS IN NEW YORK CITY IS STRETCHING TO THE HIGHER ECHELONS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD. THE NEW YORK OBSERVER REPORTS THAT BED BUGS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE LINCOLN CENTER'S DANIEL H. KOCH THEATER WHERE THE NEW YORK BALLET AND OPERA PERFORM. THE OUTBREAK WAS DISCOVERED IN A DRESSING ROOM IN FURNITURE AND COSTUMES, SO PERHAPS THE BLOOD WAS A BIT RICH IN THE SEATING AREA. CONSIDER, HOWEVER, THAT THIS COMEDY (IN TRUE WAGNERIAN STYLE) HIDES A TRAGEDY THAT BED BUGS ARE NOW SO WIDESPREAD THAT OFFICES, SCHOOLS, AGED CARE FACILITIES AND BUSINESSES ARE NOW REGULARLY CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE HARBOURING THIS MODERN EPIDEMIC. AS I HAVE STATED BEFORE, IF A VIRUS WERE TO MUTATE AND BE ABLE TO BE TRANSFERRED BY BED BUGS, WE THEN WOULD TRULY HAVE A PANDEMIC THAT IS AIRMAILED AROUND THE WORLD WITH NO LIMITS TO ITS POTENTIAL SPREAD. OBVIOUSLY BED BUGS WILL HAVE TO BITE A POLITICIAN ON THE BUM (LITERALLY) BEFORE THEY START TO TAKE NOTE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND THEM AND TO US.
AMERICAN VISIT
THE UNITED STATES ARE REALLY IN THE GRIP OF BED BUG MANIA. GOVERNMENT, BOTH FEDERAL AND LOCAL, ARE TRYING TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO THIS INCREASING EPIDEMIC AND PEST CONTROLLERS, AS HERE, ARE STRUGGLING TO GET COMPLETE ERADICATION AND CONTROL. BILL PETERSEN, THE PEST CONTROL SUPERVISOR FOR SEATTLE (THE HOUSING DEPARTMENT HAVE THEIR OWN PEST CONTROL OPERATIVES) TOLD ME THAT THE LATEST FIGURES SHOW ONE IN TEN RESIDENTS OF NEW YORK HAVE BED BUGS! THESE FIGURES ARE FRIGHTENING, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU CONSIDER IT WOULD ONLY TAKE A SLIGHT MUTATION FOR A VIRUS TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO BE TRANSFERRED BY BED BUGS AND YOU WOULD THEN HAVE YOUR NEXT WORLD PANDEMIC.

MY TOUR BEGAN WITH A STUDY DAY AT BERKELEY UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA, THE FORMER HOME OF ROBERT USINGER , AUTHOR OF "MONOGRAPH OF CIMICIDAE". UNFORTUNATELY GAIL GETTY, WHOM I WAS SUPPOSED TO MEET, WAS UNAVOIDABLY CALLED AWAY SO I WAS SHOWN THROUGH THE RESEARCH FACILITIES BY VERNARD LEWIS PHD, THE RESEARCH MANAGER. ALTHOUGH VERNARDS AREA OF EXPERTISE IS TERMITES, HE STATED THE CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE WITH BED BUGS HAD BECOME EXCESSIVE AND THE RESEARCH UNIT WERE ORGANISING A THINK TANK FOR DIRECTIONS IN BED BUG RESEARCH. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS EARMARKED US $50,000,000 TO STIMULATE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE BED BUG CONTROL. A RECENT STUDY WE DISCUSSED, HAD LOOKED INTO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HEAT APPLICATIONS FOR BED BUG TREATMENTS AND, ALTHOUGH THIS SHOWS PROMISE, THE COSTS OF THESE TREATMENTS ARE PROHIBITIVE (ALTHOUGH THIS IS PART OF THE TREATMENT REGIME IN SEATTLE WHICH I WILL DISCUSS LATER).

I HAD TRIED TO ARRANGE MEETINGS WITH SEVERAL PEST CONTROL COMPANIES AND WAS SURPRISED AT THE LACK OF CO-OPERATION. A CONFIDENTIAL MEETING WITH ONE COMPANY (THIS MEETING AND A VISIT TO AN AFFECTED MOTEL WERE SO CLOAK AND DAGGER IT WAS WORRYING) UNCOVERED THE FACT THAT MOST PEST CONTROLLERS ARE STRUGGLING WITH BED BUGS AND ARE TERRIFIED CUSTOMERS MIGHT LEARN OF THE LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN TREATMENTS. THE AFOREMENTIONED BILL PETERSEN COMMENTED THAT MANY PEST CONTROLLERS WERE REJECTING BED BUG WORK FOR THIS VERY REASON TO PROTECT THEIR REPUTATIONS.
A SPECIALIST BED BUG COMPANY IN CANADA (ALSO A STRICT NON-DISCLOSURE RULE ON OUR DISCUSSION) SEEMED TO HAVE A MUCH BETTER DEGREE OF SUCCESS BUT WERE VERY SECRETIVE ABOUT THEIR METHODS AND DID SAY THAT THE COST OF TREATMENT WAS PROHIBITIVE.
IN SEATTLE, AS MENTIONED, I HAD A FABULOUS DISCUSSION WITH BILL PETERSEN, SUPERVISOR OF PEST CONTROL FOR SEATTLE HOUSING. I NOTED THAT EVERYTHING IN HIS ROOM, ASIDE FROM SEVERAL SPORTING TROPHIES, WAS BED BUG RELATED INCLUDING THE WORK SCHEDULE. HE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH THE UNIT WAS INITIALLY SET UP FOR A COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO TREAT FOR GENERAL PESTS, COCKROACHES, RATS ETC, BED BUGS WERE NOW THE ALMOST COMPLETE FOCUS OF THE TEAM. THEY HAVE PURCHASED THEIR OWN BED BUG SNIFFER DOG AND WERE UPGRADING THEIR HEATING EQUIPMENT AT THE COST OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. THEY ALSO USE MONITORING DEVICES FOR FOLLOW UP CHECKS ON INFESTATIONS AND HAVE A "CLOVER LEAF" POLICY WHERE EVERY ADJOINING PROPERTY TO A BED BUG INFESTATION, MUST BE INSPECTED AND TREATED WHERE NECESSARY. THE TEAMS METHODS ARE, LIKE MINE, RELIANT ON IMPECCABLE PREPERATION AND THIS IS A LARGE FOCUS IN THEIR WORK. BILL MENTIONED THAT UNTRAINED OPERATORS USING HEATING EQUIPMENT, MERELY SPREAD THE BED BUGS TO ADJOINING AREAS AND FURTHER COMPLICATED TREATMENT. IT WAS HIS OPINION THAT BED BUGS WERE NOW THE BIGGEST THREAT AND CHALLENGE IN PUBLIC HOUSING AND WAS ADAMENT THAT CONTROL COULD NOT BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION. AS WITH AUSTRALIA, ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WAS THE HEAD IN THE SAND APPROACH OF COMMERCIAL OPERATORS (PEST CONTROLLERS AND ACCOMMODATION PROVIDERS) AND GOVERNMENTS. THE UNITED STATES WERE NOW IN A SITUATION WHERE THE PROBLEM HAS GROWN SO LARGE, IT HAS TO BE ADDRESSED BY GOVERNMENTS, BUT EARLIER INTERVENTION WOULD HAVE GREATLY ASSISTED CONTROL ATTEMPTS.
THIS TRIP WAS OF ENORMOUS VALUE TO MYSELF BUT, ESPECIALLY WITH INFORMATION RECEIVED AND THE ADDITIONS TO MY BED BUG ARSONEL, IT ALSO HIGHLIGHTED THE FACT THAT A BED BUG SPECIALIST IS ACHIEVING RESULTS EXCEEDING THOSE THAT I HAVE SEEN IN THE UNITED STATES OR HERE! IT SEEMS EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR THAT MAGIC BULLET (IE PESTICIDE) THAT WILL WIPE OUT THE BED BUG PROBLEM RATHER THAN RESEARCHING AND USING METHODS AND EQUIPMENT THAT ARE AVAILABLE, EVEN THOUGH THEY CAN BE TIME CONSUMING AND NEED EXPERIENCED OPERATORS. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE LARGER PEST CONTROL COMPANIES THAT MONITOR THIS SITE FOR UP TO DATE INFORMATION UNDERSTAND THIS. I WOULD ALSO ASK THAT, ALTHOUGH I AM HAPPY FOR YOU TO FOLLOW MY LEAD, COULD YOU PLEASE NOT USE MY LOGO IN YOUR ADVERTISING.
